The Challenge
The client (a major IOC) required a safe and efficient method to inspect and assess the internal condition of instrument and equipment support structures onboard an FPSO.
Traditional confined space inspections involved manual entry, scaffolding, and the use of confined space permits — all of which significantly increased safety risks, inspection time, and overall operational costs.
The inspection environment presented additional challenges such as restricted access, limited lighting, and potential gas hazards. The client needed a non-intrusive, high-resolution inspection solution that would minimize downtime, enhance safety, and maintain operational continuity.
Our Approach
To meet these objectives, our team deployed the Elios 2 drone, specifically designed for confined space operations. The Elios 2 is equipped with onboard lighting, a collision-tolerant cage, and a 4K camera, making it ideal for visual inspections in hazardous and hard-to-reach environments.
The operation was carried out in planned stages, systematically covering multiple compartments and tanks. Real-time video feeds were transmitted directly to certified API and ASNT inspectors, enabling immediate assessment of asset integrity and anomaly identification.
Prior to operations, a comprehensive pre-flight risk assessment and safety briefing were conducted. The team also employed gas detectors to ensure the absence of flammable gases before drone activation, thereby eliminating ignition risks. All activities were performed in close coordination with onboard safety officers and supervisors, ensuring full compliance with offshore safety protocols.
This innovative approach removed the need for human entry, scaffolding, or rope access — drastically reducing operational risk while delivering superior inspection data.
The Results
- Multiple confined spaces inspected safely and efficiently
- Captured high-resolution imagery and video for engineering assessment
- Delivered detailed inspection reports with maintenance and repair recommendations
- Achieved:
- ~85% reduction in inspection time
- ~60% reduction in operational costs
- Zero safety incidents
- No production interruptions
Impact
The project enabled the engineers to assess asset integrity without disrupting ongoing production activities. It also significantly reduced risk exposure for inspection personnel by over 90%, enhanced overall safety standards, and delivered immediate, actionable visual evidence for maintenance decision-making.
By leveraging UAV technology, the client achieved substantial cost and time savings, improved inspection efficiency, and strengthened operational safety performance — setting a new benchmark for offshore asset inspection in the region.
